Exhibition Concept

While culture and climate are distinct, they are both interdependent and influence each other. In 2001, the fourth pillar of sustainability was created - emphasising that the role of culture stands equally as important alongside the human, economic and social pillars of sustainability.

Culture is a basic need - it is the bedrock of society. Cultural action and the education of climate change on a local, national and international stage is required in order to lay the groundwork for a sustainable future. In another context, during the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, the Korean Pavilion presented the reality that the environmental crisis is a mirror reflection of human civilization. The mirror can show not only the successes but also the faults that the progression of humanity possesses. ‘We are not just focusing on macroscale problems, but also including a micro approach. We believe that the individual’s way of living and choices on the microlevel also affects the world on a macroscale’ - Soik Jung (Curator)

Culture for Climate sets out to promote the positive efforts made on a local and national scale. It is a celebration of environmental efforts, both reminding and questioning us as a nation, community and culture of how we may work together to overcome the impending environmental crises. It promotes ideas for developing educational techniques through art whilst communicating how cultural values, rituals and beliefs can, and does co-exist alongside environmental aims. The thought-provoking exhibition will become a testing ground for showcasing radical new ideas, alongside becoming a community learning space through workshops and events.

Artist Callout

We invite environmental artists from any discipline to submit either a single piece or body of work which questions, explores or highlights the relationship between the climate emergency and culture. It aims to celebrate positive environmental ideas and historic or current projects, spark creative conversations between the importance of education and the promotion of culture within the environmental climate. Projects may be upcoming, ongoing or completed. Alternatively, community or collaborative projects may be presented.

With each submission, please include a brief description of between 250  - 500 words which describe the work and how it fits alongside the exhibition concept.
